The truck where 39 bodies were discovered near London arrived overnight in the UK Tuesday through Wednesday through the port of Purfleet on the Thames from Zeebrugge in Belgium, British police said.

"We now believe the truck has traveled from Zeebrugge to Purfleet", where it arrived at around 12:30 a.m. (11:30 p.m. GMT), Essex police said in a statement that the vehicle had previously entered the country via the port of Holyhead, on the west coast, which serves Dublin.

The federal prosecution opened an investigation after the discovery in Essex in England of a truck containing 39 bodies. The convoy would have passed through Belgium, the federal prosecutor's office said Wednesday, confirming information from the newspaper Le Soir.

The first elements of the investigation report a container which would have arrived by Belgium and placed on a boat in Zeebrugge, specified a spokesperson of the federal parquet floor. It is unknown how long the container remained in Belgium and its precise route. The exact cause of death of the victims and the time of death are also unknown.

According to AFP, the truck came from Bulgaria.
